We’re almost there. September. October. November. December. The “Ber” months are some of my favorite months of the year. Cooler mornings. Changing leaves. Football and bonfires. Thanksgiving around the table. Christmas lights, familiar songs, and celebrating the birth of Jesus.
I love this time of year because you can feel the seasons changing. That first breath of cool crisp air in the mornings is indescribable. Leaves begin to rustle and sway as they slowly transform. Green gives way to orange, red, and gold. Another summer passes, another fall arrives, and another year moves toward its end. And the older I get, the faster it all seems to happen.
Maybe that’s because seasons aren't only changing around us. They're changing in us too.
Kids get older. Relationships change. Jobs change. People come and go. Doors open and close. There are seasons we wish we could hold onto and others we can't wait to leave behind.
Life is always changing, and it can get pretty disorienting at times. We need a constant. We need something that anchors us, grounds us, or steadies our soul in the ever-changing winds of time. Though we are changing, we need something that never changes.
“Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations… from everlasting to everlasting you are God." Psalm 90:1–2
Before this season began, He was God. When it ends, He will still be God. You need to hear this: There will never be a season when God is not God.
His character doesn't change colors. His promises don't wither and fall. His Word doesn't become outdated or dormant. His faithfulness doesn't rise and fall with our circumstances. God was, is, and will always be God. Unchanging, all-knowing, infinitely powerful, and ever-present.
What you need today is not better weather, but Jesus. Not better circumstances, but a Savior. Not perfect friends, but a perfect Father. Not better experiences, but the Holy Spirit who helps you rejoice in all experiences.
So enjoy the season. Watch the leaves change. Sit around the fires. Make the memories. Gather around the tables. Put up the Christmas lights. Embrace the changing seasons.
But as everything around you fades, abide in the One who doesn't. From everlasting to everlasting, He is God.
